Logline: A couple kidnaps a young woman to hold her wealthy father for ransom, but this seemingly simple crime holds grave consequences when secrets and loyalties are tested.
Chalk this relationship up to another social networking win. I met Nic Barker through Circalit, an online community where writers can share their work and engage with other writers. Nic actually asked me if he could shoot Charity Case, which had already been optioned by Jenn Shaw. Charity Case was off the table, but I told Nic that I’d love the opportunity to write a brand new script for him to shoot. I was thrilled when he said yes.
Now all I had to do was write a new script from scratch. No problem, right?
Turns out, writing Worth was harder than I originally thought it was going to be. The balance between day-job and creative writing had begun shifting, and I had trouble finding my footing with this story. Eventually, I cordoned myself off in a hotel room somewhere out west on one of my work trips and banged out a first draft (originally titled Trust). I liked what I’d written, but it definitely felt like a first draft. Plenty of work to do before I could hand this over to Nic.
As it turns out, that wasn’t the case at all.
Nic was chomping at the bit to get started, and he asked me to flip him a copy of what I’d written so far. At that point, he dove into a rewrite with his production partners Patrick Waring and Jock Blakley. The three of them rewrote the script from the perspectives of director and producer, tweaking elements and tones to match the story they wanted to tell, as well as adjusting the script to align with the locations, resources, and talent that would be bring this script to life.
(Did I mention that I live in Columbus, Ohio and Nic lives in Melbourne, Australia? That 10,000 mile gap may have made a face-to-face meeting difficult, but we kept the conversation going regardless. Thanks, interwebs!)
As of this post, Worth has already been selected to the Jerome Indie Film & Music Festival and the Intendence Film Festival. I’m thrilled with how Worth turned out, and I have a hunch you’ll be seeing more amazing work from Nic and his crew in the near future.
